That riled @TheTrivia Jockey, who tweeted, “If that was God’s will, God is definitely not deserving of my worship.”

     I am excited in a couple of ways to see this kind of public debate being hosted on CNN. Although church and state ought to remain separate, it’s interesting to know what people are saying about the massacre in Aurora, Colorado in the context of what they believe.
It’s interesting to see people blaming God for what happened — it’s interesting to see them remove Him from blame as well. As if either were practical or possible in a Unified Universe! ;)
I’ve noticed something, though. People expect a lot from God. Maybe a lot more than is fair. Would we, for example, expect our parents to protect us in a movie theater from a crazy gunman? Would we expect our ministers to do that, our presidents, our police? If we would not require these things from these people, why do we demand them from God?
Why do we view our own human world in statistics, numbers, probabilities, indulgences, and terms of risk, but demand that God render his offerings to us under terms of perfection? Why do we demand protection from the freedom we are meant to enjoy?
When people suffer, when we witness or feel pain, it is not enviable. Except that a kind man once told me, “Your tears will bring you wisdom”. That’s not an easy thing to hear, except to know that you’re not being judged when you are in pain. No one likes to cry. But like I tried to say after the Cafe Racer Shooting here in Seattle, which occurred right before the beginning of June,

When God breaks pieces off of His Tree,

It is not done to hurt the tree –

He wanted to see how much Life

was in the branches.

Although we mourn the lost, we also celebrate that we are alive, that they were also alive, that life means something more than just running away in terror when arrows fly. Responding to an emergency is just as much about pulling together and cooperating as it is about casting blame and protecting your private interests.
Now, what the authorities find in regards to the shooting in Colorado might shock the public. The total silence of the authorities, on the other hand, may speak as loudly as any headline. We might not like what we hear, we might not get the whole picture, but we can’t let these events stop our lives dead in their tracks. We have to keep on living like the day before it happened. We can’t let the specter of war lead us into war. That is cowardice.

A CLOSER LOOK AT BATMAN: “Monarch Movie Theater”. Reviewing the “Monarch Theater Showdown” in the Game BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY!

Arkham City, like its predecessor, Arkham Asylum, is an open world action video game that incorporates elements of stealth and predator tactics.All of the gadgets previously obtained in the first game will be present at the start of Arkham City, most of them will be possessing improved or new capabilities; for example, the Cryptographic sequencer can also track signals.

An additional gadget have been revealed: smoke bombs to confuse enemies.

The game incorporates more puzzle elements; the use of Batman’s “Detective Mode”, which highlights elements such as enemy skeletons and clues on-screen, is used to perform forensic activities such as tracing the origin of a sniper round. The player also has access to a criminal database that tracks the major villains across the city and the forensic puzzles much like the first game.

However, Rocksteady’s art director David Hego stated that the use of Detective Mode will be changed to an “augmented reality mode”, as they found players had completed Arkham Asylum using Detective Mode all of the time.

Optional challenges from the Riddler to collect hidden trophies placed around the city will also be present, but it will require additional effort to locate these, such as interrogation of men loyal to the Riddler.

Strange Allegations! (pun intended!)

Okay my little Strangelets, are you ready for this one? A fellow on ATS forum said that the Aurora alleged killer, James Holmes, a gifted neuroscience major, was studying theparanormal phenomenon of “temporal illusions”, i.e. events which supposedly, under certain quantum physics conditions, can alter the past — something CERN stolidly denies (they have to compartmentalize and censor their findings — Fuhrer’s orders lol). We’ll probably never know the truth about the faster-than-light Neutrino experiments, although those of us who kept up with IceCube Neutrino Observatory and Cherenkov Radiationeffects know in our hearts that we aren’t being told the whole story about superposition and time travel human experience.
Most of us have seen movies like “The Butterfly Effect” and “Back to the Future”. I am sure that most of us dismissed the ideas as impossible, or just enjoyed the entertainment while ignoring the content.
Most of us have heard of CERN and the God Particle. But who would have thought that there would be any link whatsoever to the Colorado Batman Theater Shooting and the Higgs Boson being discovered? I wouldn’t have thought that without being told somehow. But I have been worried about CERN. I have been worried about metaphysics and spirituality, and where they intersect with practical Nazi science.

So… what is this temporal illusion? I am a psychology major, and I am a bit skeptical about temporal illusions being used to change the past, although there is a theory in quantum psychology that the past can be changed for the individual, it is not nearly mainstream. So I honestly don’t know what James is talking about. Let’s go see if Wikipedia has any answers (it doesn’t).
A temporal illusion is a distortion in sensory perception caused when the time between the occurrence of two or more events is very short (typically less than a second). In such cases a person may misperceive the temporal order of the events. The kappa effect is a form of temporal illusion verifiable by experiment[16] whereby time intervals between visual events are perceived as relatively longer or shorter depending on the relative spatial positions of the events. In other words, the perception of temporal intervals appears to be directly affected, in these cases, by the perception of spatial intervals. The Kappa effect can be displayed when considering a journey made in two parts that take an equal amount of time. Between these two parts, the journey that covers more distance will appear to take longer than the journey covering less distance, even though they take an equal amount of time.
I think that is pretty clear, just read the last sentence;

although I don’t see how that is changing any events in the past, one could say that one’s perception of time has been modified. And surprisingly, this little tidbit does come into play later in this thread.

Parashas Mattos begins with a discussion about nedarim (oaths), a fitting way to end a book that emphasizes the power of the mouth to create and direct reality. As we mentioned at the beginning of this sefer, the word for “desert” (midbar) itself, with only a slight vowel change, spells the word “medabehr,” which means “speaking being.” It is the Kabbalistic term for man, since, as Onkeles points out, it was speech that man gained when G-d breathed a soul into him (Bereishis 2:7).
The word for “oath” itself — neder — says a tremendous amount. Neder is spelled: nun-dalet-raish, which can be read: nun-dar, which means “nun lives there.” Of course, whenever we see a nun, we see a reference to the “Nun Sha’arei Binah,” the “Fifty Gates of Understanding,” the ultimate goal of man with which he can view creation through the eyes of G-d, and become a full partner with the Creator in bringing creation to fruition.
One of the halachos of nedarim has to do with the annulment by a husband of vows made by his wife, as the posuk above explains. The Talmud explains this verse as follows:
To what does this verse refer? To a woman whose husband annulled them for her without her knowing. The verse is teaching that she needs atonement and forgiveness [from Heaven] “(Nazir 23a)
In other words, in such a case when a woman breaks a vow that she believes is still in effect, even though her husband has already annulled it, she requires forgiveness from G-d. Why? Because she thought that she was sinning by committing the act she previously vowed not to do, and for that lack of self-control and perhaps, for her rebelliousness, she requires atonement.
The Talmud follows this up by adding:
When Rebi Akiva reached this verse, he would cry: If one who thought to pick up treif meat instead lifted up kosher meat still needs atonement and forgiveness, how much more so one who intends to take treif meat and indeed, takes treif meat!
In other words, if G-d is so “strict” about an intended sin that ends up not being a sin, how much more so must He take notice and punish intended sins that actually do result in sin! Or, perhaps, maybe Rebi Akiva cried because we can assume from the posuk that, if G-d punishes only for the intention to sin, then, how much more so must He punish for an intended sin that is actually carried out as planned.
However, is this really true? Elsewhere, the Talmud seems to say just the opposite, namely that G-d does not punish a Jew for intending to sin until it becomes reality (Kiddushin 39b). So, why does Rebi Akiva make this inference and cry as a result?
Then again, the question is not for Rebi Akiva, but for the Talmud. After all, Rebi Akiva is only speaking out what is implied by the posuk in this week’s parshah, regarding the wife who thinks her vow is still operative. The Torah is implying that intention to sin is enough to require atonement and forgiveness, so, then, how can the Talmud say otherwise?
According to some, G-d does count the intention to sin as reality, even for a Jew, if it is inevitable that the Jew will commit the sin when not prevented. Hence, to use Rebi Akiva’s analogy, the very fact that we see the person pick up meat he thinks is treif to consume proves that he would have done the sin, had not circumstances prevented him. Hence, from G-d’s point of view, it is as if the sin was done, even if, in reality, it was not.

I call Hemochromatosis “General George Washington’s Disease”, because I believe it explains the need for his frequent phlebotomy.

NN says: Hemochromatosis is a blood disorder that causes the body to deposit large amounts of iron near infection sites and in specific types of tissue, at risk of depleting necessary iron reserves in the blood, needed for Oxygen transport! The gene that accounts for this is thought to be an ancient evolutionary mechanism for fighting disease through changing the pH of the human bloodstream, along with other factors.
What could cause the body to prioritize fighting an infection over getting enough oxygen? That one is easy to answer in this case. The body can repair a certain amount of damage by itself. Even brain damage is temporary for some lucky robust people. But if the immune system is dis-regulated to the point of attacking body tissues more than the virus infecting them, the bodies of those who have encountered AIDSlike diseases in the ancient past recognizes the threat and responds.
Are we closer than ever to finding a good treatment for AIDS that causes minimal side effects? Could blood transfusions from people with certain blood disorders actually be therapeutic for non-white AIDS victims? People use bee stings for therapy — they break down toxins. Why wouldn’t you shoot up with some “werewolf” blood if you thought it would kill your AIDS? Heh!

The transplant not only cured his cancer, it appears to have cured his HIV, because the virus is no longer detectable.

But Brown’s case is rare. The procedure is extremely dangerous because a patient’s immune system has to be wiped out in order to accept the bone marrow transplant. Using a bone marrow transplants to treat HIV is not a feasible treatment for most patients; only 1% of Caucasians — mostly Northern Europeans — and no African-Americans or Asians have this particular mutation, researchers say.

Serum Ferritin Level Test

The serum ferritin test acts as an indirect measure of iron storage in the liver. Serum ferritin levels are considered in the normal range for males and postmenopausal females if they are between 20 and 300 ug/L, or between 20 and 200ug/L for premenopausal females. People with advanced hemochromatosis may have serum ferritin levels as high as 15,000 ug/L. However, other factors besides hemochromatosis can cause high serum ferritin levels, including liver disease, infection, cancer, heart disease, AIDS, metabolic disorders, andinflammatory conditions such as arthritis. (and autism ~nuclearnuttery)
If individuals have elevated serum ferritin levels, or fasting transferrin saturation levels, genetic testing for hemochromatosis may help to identify the reason for the increase in iron storage.

Abstract

Background/Aims: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is increasingly recognized, and its pathogenesis is believed to involve increased oxidative stress. Elevated levels of serum ferritin and positive liver iron stains are often observed in patients with NASH, and the pathogenesis of liver injury due to iron is also thought to involve oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association of NASH and mutations in the HFE gene associated with hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC).
Methods: Clinical, laboratory, and histopathological data on all 57 subjects with a final diagnosis of NASH seen between August 1990 and August 1997 at our Liver Center were analyzed. Thirty-six Caucasian subjects (23 men) with NASH underwent mutational analyses of HFE gene mutations performed. The prevalence of HFE gene mutations was compared to that in 348 Caucasian normal controls. Data were analyzed by both parameteric and non-parametric methods with similar results.
Results: One subject (2.8%) with NASH was homozygous for the C282Y mutation and six (16.7%) were heterozygous, compared with 0% and 11.2%, respectively, of controls. Two (5.6%) subjects with NASH were homozygous for the H63D mutation and 16 (44.4%) were heterozygous, whereas 2.9% and 26.4%, respectively, of controls had these genotypes. The prevalence of heterozygosity (61.1%) for either mutation was significantly higher in subjects with NASH than in controls (38%) (p=0.008), and the prevalence of homozygosity or heterozygosity combined in NASH subjects (69.4%) was significantly higher than for controls (40.5%, p=0.001). Sex (63–67% male) and age at diagnosis of NASH did not differ between those with or without HFE mutations, but men with NASH were significantly more likely than women to have the H63D mutation (15/23 vs. 3/13, p<0.05) Levels of serum ferritin, iron, transferrin saturation levels, and the degree of hepatic iron staining were significantly higher (p<0.05) in subjects with NASH who carried an HFE mutation than in those without. Differences in hepatic iron concentrations or hepatic iron indices between NASH subjects with and without HFE mutations were not significant. Those with C282Y mutations had significantly more hepatic fibrosis than those without (p<0.05). Those with HFE mutations had significantly higher levels of serum ALT (90±11 [mean±SE]) than those without (55±6; p=0.02).
Conclusion: The prevalences of the HFE gene mutations associated with hereditary hemochromatosis are increased among North American subjects with NASH.

Madonna used guns on stage during one of her live concerts in Scotland over the weekend in light of the Colorado shooting that just occurred early Friday.
According to MSN, police officials urged the pop icon not to have firearms and weapons during the Murrayfield Stadium concert in Edinburgh. It wasn’t a good idea given the fact the Aurora shooting in Colorado was fresh in the minds of everyone. As usual, Madonna played by her own rules. She’s made headlines with exposing her nipple, buttocks, and other bold moves throughout the year promoting her latest album.
Madonna brandished fake pistols and an AK47 at her concert — likely a theme she executed for the violent song, “Gang Bang.” The lyrics are about a woman who fantasizes about killing her ex-husband for leaving her.
It wasn’t a sensitive move on Madonna’s part after 12 victims in the Colorado shooting were killed and 50 other injured by a sick gunman. The entertainer isn’t known for her sensitivity, but this instance may have gone too far for sure.

“A friend of Sylvester Stallone’s late son has meanwhile disputed reports the 36-year-old committed suicide, saying he was ‘healthy and upbeat’ just two weeks before his sudden death.

As coroner’s officials investigate if the death was accidental, a friend of the young filmmaker says he is baffled by the news because he ‘never knew him to do drugs’.

A Black Madonna or Black Virgin is a statue or painting of Mary in which she is depicted with dark skin, especially those created in Europe in the medieval period or earlier. In this specialized sense “Black Madonna” does not apply to images of the Virgin Mary portrayed as explicitly ethnically black, which are popular in Africa and areas with large black populations, such as Brazil and the United States.
The Black Madonnas are generally found in Catholic areas. The statues are mostly wooden but occasionally stone, often painted and up to 75 cm tall, generally dating from between the 11th and 15th centuries. They fall into two main groups: free-standing upright figures and seated figures on a throne. The pictures are usually icons which are Byzantine in style, often made in 13th or 14th century Italy. There are about 450–500 Black Madonnas inEurope, depending on how they are classified. There are at least 180 Vierges Noires inFrance, and there are hundreds of non-medieval copies as well. Some are in museums, but most are in churches or shrines and are venerated by devotees. A few are associated withmiracles and attract substantial numbers of pilgrims.
